Registered gas contractors in Hong Kong

Installing a gas hotplate or water heater, replacing flexible gas tubing or repairing a gas appliance is gas installation work, and EMSD says only registered gas installers of the appropriate class, employed by registered gas contractors, can personally carry it out. This page lists all 442 registered gas contractors on EMSD’s overall list with the classes of gas installation work they are registered for: search by name or RGC number, or browse by district.

Who may do gas work

Under the Gas Safety (Registration of Gas Installers and Gas Contractors) Regulations, EMSD says, only registered gas installers (registered to the appropriate class) employed by registered gas contractors can personally carry out gas installation work. Gas installation work includes the fabrication, connection, disconnection, testing, commissioning, decommissioning, maintenance, repair or replacement of gas pipework, appliances and fittings — for example installing a gas hotplate or water heater, replacing flexible gas tubing or repairing a gas appliance. A registered gas installer should carry a registration card when performing gas installation work and show it to the client when asked.

Since 1 April 1992 no person shall employ a contractor other than a registered gas contractor for gas installation work. EMSD says the purpose of registration is to ensure that only competent gas contractors, who employ registered gas installers and appropriate material resources, undertake gas installation work, for the safety of gas users and members of the public.

Gas installation work is in eight classes, and EMSD’s overall list shows the classes each contractor is registered for:

  • Class 1: Installation, commissioning and routine maintenance of a domestic gas appliance which is a hotplate supplied by not more than one cylinder.
  • Class 2: Installation of a service pipe, and any gas flow control, primary meter or primary meter installation used in connection with such pipe, in domestic premises; and an installation pipe in domestic premises.
  • Class 3: Installation and commissioning of a service pipe, and any gas flow control, primary meter or primary meter installation used in connection with such pipe, in domestic premises; an installation pipe in domestic premises; and a domestic gas appliance.
  • Class 4: Installation of domestic gas appliances to existing, adjacent gas supply points and commissioning and servicing of domestic gas appliances.
  • Class 5: Installation of a service pipe, and any gas flow control, primary meter or primary meter installation used in connection with such pipe, in non-domestic premises; and an installation pipe in non-domestic premises.
  • Class 6: Installation and commissioning of a service pipe, and any gas flow control, primary meter or primary meter installation used in connection with such pipe, in non-domestic premises; an installation pipe in non-domestic premises; and a non-domestic gas appliance.
  • Class 7: Installation of non-domestic gas appliances to existing, adjacent gas supply points and commissioning and servicing of non-domestic gas appliances.
  • Class 8: Installation, commissioning and servicing of a gas appliance which forms part of an industrial process.

EMSD also keeps contractor lists for particular work; this site shows these as flags on each contractor:

  • Contractor List 1: gas installation work in commercial kitchens (Towngas)
  • Contractor List 2: gas installation work in commercial kitchens (LPG)
  • Contractor List 3: dim sum trolley supply and/or service

How to check a gas contractor

  1. Find the contractor on EMSD’s list of registered gas contractors, and check that it is registered for the class of work you need.
  2. Ask the installer for his registration card; registered gas installers can be checked on EMSD’s search for registered gas installers.

EMSD updates the lists monthly and this site copies them weekly, so a registration made or ended in the meantime may not show here yet: EMSD’s register is the authority. Details are on EMSD’s pages about gas installation work and registered gas contractors and registration as a gas contractor.

To protect privacy, this site never shows the name of a natural person. Companies, partnerships, firms and trade names are listed under their names, a sole proprietor under the trading name only, and a name that on its own reads as a person’s is not shown. An entry whose name is a person’s is counted but not named, and so is one whose name seems to contain a person’s full name until it has been reviewed; neither has a page of its own.

Registered gas contractors by district
