The hard part of driving in Hong Kong is parking. There are 581 hourly car parks and 20,682 roadside metered spaces; some car parks carry live vacancy counts from the Transport Department. Below is what a meter actually costs and how long you may stay, before you go looking.

What does a roadside meter cost, and how long can you stay?

Meters are not a single rate. The great majority charge $4 per 15 minutes — $16 an hour — while some older or outlying stretches still charge $2 per 15 minutes. Maximum stay varies too, most commonly two hours. These are the real counts from Transport Department open data:

  • Hourly car parks: 581 indoor and open-air car parks. Some report live vacant spaces from the Transport Department, shown in green on the card, so you know before you reach the barrier.
  • Roadside meters: 20,682 spaces across more than nine hundred streets. Good for a short stop, but watch the maximum stay and the vehicle class — goods-vehicle and coach bays are marked separately.

Paying

Hong Kong’s meters take Octopus, credit cards and mobile payment apps, and you can extend remotely within that meter’s maximum stay. Confirm the payment went through before you walk away: the penalty is many times the fee.
