Hong Kong Recycling Point Map: GREEN@COMMUNITY, Smart Bins & Clothes Banks

Not sure where your plastics, glass or food waste can go? Hong Kong has 9,731 recycling points — EPD GREEN@COMMUNITY stations and stores, scheduled mobile spots, and smart bins in malls and estates — plus 187 clothes banks. The tables below count each type and show which materials each accepts.

How many recycling points are there, and of what kind?

“Recycling point” covers several different things. The staffed ones that take the widest range are EPD’s GREEN@COMMUNITY recycling stations and stores; mobile spots appear on the street on a fixed weekly schedule; smart bins sit in malls, campuses and housing estates and scan into the GREEN$ rewards scheme. These are the real counts, straight from EPD open data and refreshed weekly:

Which points take plastics, glass or food waste?

Acceptance is not uniform. Metals, plastics and paper are taken almost everywhere; glass bottles and rechargeable batteries at far fewer; food waste and small electrical appliances concentrate at the GREEN@COMMUNITY sites. The table counts the points accepting each material:

What makes GREEN@COMMUNITY different?

It is EPD’s own community recycling network. Recycling stations are the largest and take the most, and run education and community activities; recycling stores are shopfronts for everyday drop-offs; mobile spots run on a fixed weekly rota. All three award GREEN$ points redeemable for daily necessities — public-place bins and private estate collection points generally do not.

Clothes recycling banks

The map also carries 187 clothes recycling banks for reusable clothing and footwear, run by charities and recyclers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What items can be recycled at community recycling points?
Generally waste paper, plastic bottles/containers, metal cans, glass bottles, and fluorescent lamps — exact acceptance varies by location, so check on-site signage or EPD announcements.
How many GREEN@COMMUNITY points are there in Hong Kong?
EPD open data lists just over ninety recycling stations and stores whose Chinese names begin 綠在, plus several hundred scheduled mobile spots and more than a thousand smart bins. The table above gives the exact counts, refreshed weekly with the official data.
How should I prepare items before recycling?
Rinse and drain containers, remove caps and labels from plastic bottles, keep paper dry and flat, and empty glass bottles and metal cans. Batteries, fluorescent lamps and small appliances go to designated points, not general recycling bins. Clothes should be clean and intact — underwear, damaged or mouldy items are usually refused.
